Twelve weeks and counting!

So much time has gone by since my last entry. I really wish I was better at this, but it doesn’t look like I am. You’re now officially 12 weeks in the womb as of Thursday. Your mom and I are very excited. She’s still feeling sick every once in a while, but that’s the way of the world I suppose. She’ll go in next week for her next appointment. I kind of sloughed off on the Latin learning. Hopefully I’ll be able to pick it back up again … but … There’s really so much to do in life, and sometimes I want to try and get it all done before dinner. You’ll probably notice that about me. I’m an all or nothing kind of guy, although I’m working on that. A huge tragedy happened since the last time I wrote. Something you might read about in a history class at some point: Hurricane Katrina. What may very well be the largest internal Diaspora since the Dust Bowl in the 1930’s, it was a major disaster. I don’t know that if you do learn about it, the text you read will be able to convey the horror that was witnessed by millions on television. The ineptness of those in charge was nearly criminally negligent, and I’m sure that by the time you’re my age the New Orleans of your day will be nothing like the New Orleans of mine. In other news, Judge John Roberts, who was nominated by President Bush (the second not the first) went through his confirmation hearing this last week. I spent most of the week listening to Republican Senators extol his virtues, and ask mostly softball questions, while at the same time promoting their own legislative initiatives, not doing much in the way of advising and consenting (except for Arlen Specter, Chairman of the committee, Senator from Pennsylvania), while the Democrats were busy trying to brow beat him into answering questions he did not want to answer. If you ever want to listen to a smart person make other smart people look foolish, listen to these hearings. He was able to frustrate the Democratic Senators into submission, and although the committee will recommend him to the full Senate, I think that he may get the lowest passing vote, maybe about 55-60 votes (which means that at most 5 Democrats [most likely from Red States] will vote against party lines). I don’t really know why I’m writing all of this. And I don’t really know why I’m podcasting as many current political discussion as I can for you. Maybe I’m hoping that you’ll find them useful to know the mindset of America at the dawn of the 21st century. Or maybe you won’t. But either way, I want you to know what it is that you were born into. Always remember this, no matter what your teacher, history book, or whatever tells you, question it until you are fully satisfied with the answer. Don’t take anything at face value. If I can teach you anything, I hope it is that. Skepticism is not a vice, it is a virtue. Well, enough of my soap box speaking. It’s late and I’m tired. Off to bed I go … remember, be your own person, and you’ll do just fine. Love you
